Saju and your zodiac signs: what your sun, moon, and rising add to a Korean birth chart
Saju and Western astrology start from the same sky. Your Saju month pillar and your sun sign both come from where the sun was when you were born, so the two systems already overlap. Saju stays the core reading, built on five elements and four pillars. Your sun, moon, and rising signs then show how your version of that chart plays out: where they double down on it, and where they pull the other way.
Where the two systems overlap
| Saju piece | Western piece | What they share |
|---|---|---|
| Month pillar (your birth season) | Sun sign | Both come from the sun's position. Saju months start at the middle of each zodiac sign |
| Hour pillar | Rising sign | Both need your birth time and change about every two hours |
| Day Master (your core self) | Sun sign | Both are the headline of the reading, but they are calculated differently |
| Five elements | Four elements | Saju adds Wood and Metal and has no Air |
| No direct match | Moon sign | Saju has no moon layer, so the moon sign adds something new: your emotional weather |
Your sun sign straddles two Saju months
Saju months begin on solar terms, which fall in the middle of each zodiac sign. So every sun sign is split across two Saju months, and an early Leo and a late Leo can land in different Saju seasons.
| Sun sign | First half falls in | Second half falls in |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Rabbit month (spring) | Dragon month (late spring) |
| Taurus | Dragon month (late spring) | Snake month (early summer) |
| Gemini | Snake month (early summer) | Horse month (midsummer) |
| Cancer | Horse month (midsummer) | Goat month (late summer) |
| Leo | Goat month (late summer) | Monkey month (early autumn) |
| Virgo | Monkey month (early autumn) | Rooster month (autumn) |
| Libra | Rooster month (autumn) | Dog month (late autumn) |
| Scorpio | Dog month (late autumn) | Pig month (early winter) |
| Sagittarius | Pig month (early winter) | Rat month (midwinter) |
| Capricorn | Rat month (midwinter) | Ox month (late winter) |
| Aquarius | Ox month (late winter) | Tiger month (early spring) |
| Pisces | Tiger month (early spring) | Rabbit month (spring) |
How Saju Decode blends them
- The reading always starts from your Saju chart: your Day Master, your season, and your element balance.
- Your sun and moon signs are calculated from your birth date and time. Your rising sign is optional, because it also needs your birth city.
- The blend section then shows where your signs agree with your chart and where they pull against it, for example a Metal Day Master with a Cancer sun.
FAQ
Do I need my birth time?
No. Your sun sign and most of your Saju chart come from your date. The birth time adds your hour pillar and makes the moon sign exact. Your rising sign needs the time and the city.
Which one is more accurate, Saju or astrology?
Neither is scientifically validated. They are two traditions for reflecting on yourself. Saju is especially good at comparing two people, and astrology has a familiar vocabulary for moods and first impressions.
Is my Chinese zodiac animal the same as my zodiac sign?
No. Your zodiac animal comes from your birth year in Saju. Your Western zodiac sign comes from your birthday. Saju uses the animal as one of eight characters.
