Korean astrology by date of birth: your Saju birth chart, explained
Korean astrology is called Saju (사주), which means "four pillars." It turns the year, month, day, and hour you were born into four pairs of characters, eight in total, and reads them through five elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. The character for your birth day, called the Day Master, stands for your core self. It's the same system known in Chinese as BaZi or the Four Pillars of Destiny.
The four pillars
Each pillar is one Heavenly Stem (10 possible) on top of one Earthly Branch (12 possible, the same 12 animals as the Chinese zodiac). Four pillars × 2 characters = 8 characters. In Korean, those eight characters are called palja (팔자), and "it's my palja" is an everyday way of saying "it's my fate."

The five elements
Every character belongs to one of five elements. Saju cares less about which element you have and more about how they interact.
Feeding cycle: Wood feeds Fire → Fire makes Earth (ash) → Earth holds Metal (ore) → Metal carries Water (condensation) → Water feeds Wood.
Checking cycle: Wood breaks up Earth (roots) · Earth dams Water · Water puts out Fire · Fire melts Metal · Metal cuts Wood.
A chart heavy in one element and missing another is read as a personality with strong defaults and predictable blind spots.
How people use Saju in Korea

Is Korean astrology the same as Chinese astrology?
They share the same foundation. The Chinese zodiac animal you know ("I'm a Rabbit") is just one of your eight characters, the year branch. Saju and BaZi read all eight. The Korean tradition has its own vocabulary, reading culture, and a strong habit of using it for relationships and compatibility.

What are the Korean astrology signs?
Korean astrology has no 12 sun signs. Your "sign" is usually two things: your Day Master (one of 10, from your birth date) and your year animal, called tti (띠), one of the 12 zodiac animals. Koreans ask "what's your tti?" the way Americans ask "what's your sign?"
Do I need my birth time for Saju?
It helps but it isn't required. Without a birth time you get three pillars (six characters) instead of four, and the reading skips the hour pillar. Your Day Master comes from your birth date, so it's still there.
Does Saju use the lunar calendar?
The famous part is solar. Saju months change on solar terms, fixed points of the sun's path, and the Saju year starts at Ipchun, around February 4. That's why someone born January 30 counts as the previous year's animal in Saju.
Is Saju accurate?
There's no scientific evidence that birth charts predict personality or events. People use Saju the way they use a horoscope or a personality quiz: as a language for talking about differences and a prompt for reflection.
